Q: 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, weird stalling problem.?
I bought a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee from a dealership, and the next day is started stalling. It stalls when driving down the road, or when stopped at a stop sign or right after turning it on in the morning. It doesn't seem to have any pattern. We have had the fuel pump replaced, the fuel filter, the engine coil, corroded wires, etc. There really aren't a lot of good mechanics on the island where I live and no one can seem to figure out what's wrong. Any ideas?
Oh, and sometimes it will go for a couple of days without stalling at all. Sometimes it starts right back up, sometimes it takes ten minutes.
Thank you. I did the ignition thing, and it actually gave me a digital readout on the mileage area. It flashed a 12, then back to the regular mileage, then a 55, then back to the mileage. I know the 55 is the end code, but the 12 says "battery or computer recently disconnected." I don't think that can be the cause of all of these problems for so long, can it?
A: Go here:
http://www.allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.html
Try the test on the first line. It says that it's for '80s and early '90s chrysler vehicles but it works on '97 wranglers. If you have any questions as to what a certain code means for you...repost on here and I might be able to help you.
Q: I have a 1997 jeep grand cherokee And when it is cold it always takes twice to start sometimes 3 times?
But after you drive it and it warms up go to turn it off and start it back up it starts fine.
A: It sounds like a failed check valve in the fuel filter/regulator unit that sits on top of the fuel pump assembly. Every time it has been left for a long time the fuel line needs to be filled and pressurised before you have enough pressure to start. Try turning the ignition key on a few times before you start that might presurrise the fuel line and make starting easier. Fuel filter unit is on ebay for $50 but the tank needs dropping to fit it. At that age it might be worth getting the whole fuel pump unit replaced.
Q: Where is the relief tube on a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
When the air conditioner is running, water leaks into the passenger side floor board and we are trying to fix it. Please Help!
A: Its on the firewall behind the motor. Crawl under the truck and look behind the motor and you should see it. You can try jamming a coathanger in but I find using a blow gun with compressed air up the tube usually clears the blockage pretty well.
Q: How do you turn off the Check Engine light in a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee without taking it to a dealer?
The check engine light came on while relocating from texas to new mexico. It had a load in the back and didn't like the rolling hills on the highway. It has a 6 cyl and is running in perfect condition. There's nothing wrong with it and I just want to turn off the check engine light that's illuminating on the instrument panel without having to take it to a mechanic or a dealer. Is there a way it can be reset?
A: If you have an Auto Zone store in your area you can take it there and they have a machine that checks what the problem is at no cost. After you find out what the problem is, you can decide whether or not to take it to a dealer. If you don't have any Auto Zone, try any other auto parts store chain in your part of the country
Q: will rims off a 2005 - 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Fit a 1997?
will rims off a 2005 - 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Fit a 1997 Jeep Cherokee... are the bolt patters the same?
A: Same bolt pattern, 5x4.5
Q: 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Problem?
When I try to start my 97 Jeep Cherokee, it will turn over and try to start for a few seconds and won't actually start unless I cut the engine off and try to start it again right away. So I turn the key and the engine cranks, turn off the car and turn the key to start it again and it starts right up. When I drive it, it will go a few miles and then putter out and die. If I leave it off for a few minutes, it will start up again and then I drive it a few minutes, it dies again. I have replaceed the fuel pump and filter and have done a complete tune up and replaced the battery and it STILL does it. Please help.
took it back to the shop and they rechecked their work and fuel pump, it was all fine...so back to the drawing board I guess.
A: Hi, I got your message to check in on this.
The extra info you've given this time about the car puttering out after a few miles basically throws out ignition management as the root cause. It certainly sounds like fuel. In fact, only three things will make a car die off like that: lack of fuel, or lack of spark, or lack of air. Doubtful it's an air problem, it just doesn't crop up that way, and it's 99% against it being spark unless it's a very weird thing like an intermittent short, so that leaves fuel.
And all this trouble started the day after you had the fuel pump replaced. Right?
So...I'd suspect either a vapour lock in the fuel line (which has already been quite rightly mentioned as it's a very common problem and fits the symtoms so it's well worth checking). There could be a vapour lock due to either the fuel inlet (or outlet) pipe to the new fuel pump being turned slightly when it was tightened up so it's too close to something hot, OR a defect in the new fuel pump itself. A pinhole leak in the wrong place or something a fraction out of line when it was put together in the factory is all it takes to make it go bad.
I hope it was a new one and not a reconditioned job. They're notorious for faults, in all sorts of cars. Some places do good recos and others are plain woeful.
Anyway, check where the fuel input/output pipes are, or get a decent mechanic to check them out and see they're lined up properly. If they're good, then there's a problem with the new fuel pump, in which case whoever put it on should either repair or replace it as a warranty job. Might be worth taking a mechanic friend with you, or at least someone who knows how to talk about cars with mechanics. Saves a lot of double-talk.
If I'd known about the 'splutter and die' problem before I would've gone for fuel right away instead of electrics (especially seeing as any time a part is changed you can get a dud new one), but live and learn...:)
Hope this helps,
Lenky.
Q: 1997 jeep grand cherokee laredo?
I am looking into a jeep grand cherokee laredo. it has 170,000 miles but is in good shape. It seems like it is well maintained. How long (in years) do you think it will last?
A: with that kind of mileage on it id say a few more years anyway ,you have to keep in mind that the mileage will affect it when its that high on it,so its going to need a lot more maintenance work done on it and it is going to give more problems than a lower mileage vehicle will give also,so keep this in mind when buying it,other wise it may last a long time,i have seen those go well over 300 k before,if taken good care of,whats going to make the difference is how well is was maintained before you got it,good luck with it hope this helps.
Q: How do I repair an EVAP problem that causes code P1494 on 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
Different mechanic, different code.
The latest computer scan provided a code for P1494. We reset the code and the engine light came back on. Any suggestions for problems that would result in this error code.
Mechanic says its the EVAP system. Haynes book says to check hoses and replace the charcoal canister. But, the parts store does not have canisters and said that they never need to be replaced. Is there something else that I should replace?
A: do not replace the canister. this code sets when the ldp switch does not close when the vacuum is let into the ldp. an evap leak will not set this code. first check the vacuum to the ldp. if it is ok, you will need a wiring diagram to check the battery voltage, and the control wire, and the switch state wire to the ldp. if the wiring to the ldp is good, then the switch in the ldp is bad, and you replace the ldp. this is the case almost 100% of the time.
Q: My dashboard lights dim after I drive for awhile in my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Can anyone help?
When it is night I can barely see the time, how much gas I have left, speedometer, RPMs, and other displays. I slide the switch all the way up before the map lights come on, but it doesn't help.
A: Clean or replace the map light switch. mine does the same thing but flickers to
Q: Question about awful 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
Recently my information center display kept displaying "coolant sensor bad". So I replaced the coolant sensor with a new one and went on about my day. A few hours later, the same message appeared again. I checked all connections and all was well, yet it still keeps saying that. Does anyone have any ideas? I am ready to drive this jeep off a tall building This is just another problem on the already ongoing list of problems. If it matters, the jeep is a 97 and 4.0. Please share your wisdom before I explode!
A: Reset system. Should be able to unhook the battery for about half an hour and reconnect.
Doublecheck coolant level.
Q: my 1997 jeep grand cherokee limiteds dash stopped displaying anything, i?
I think i shorted the diagnostic connector, the radio displays but no sound, no speedo, no digital odometer, no air bag cycle test light on start up it does run fine but no tach either any answers?
A: Did you check all of your fuses? Everythings electronically controlled if you dont have a blown fuse you better just bring it to a dealership. Jeep are very electronically sensitive, I know I own one and have owned plenty.
Q: Why does my 1997 jeep grand cherokee have the check engine light on it says multiple misfires?
A: I would start with new wires and plugs and that should fix it. However plugs and wires may not be the only problem. An other reason for misfires is lack of fuel due to clogged fuel filter or weak pump also high amounts of carbon in the combustion chamber will absorb the fuel and it will not allow enough fuel to burn for the combustion process to take place fully IE misfire. Poor compression valves lots of things but keep it simple and use good quality tune up parts. A tow bill will more than make up the differance of cheap non OEM parts.Start will a full tune up wires plugs pcv valve fuel filter and you should have a happy Jeep. Sorry for the rambling but alot of people try to over simplify these things.
Q: Sometimes when I start my 1997 jeep grand cherokee, all the lights flash on and off. Any ideas?
only happens in the morning when the auto lamps come on.... maybe a fault code of some sort... really have no idea.....
It has only happened in the morning when the auto lamps come on...it is all the lights including dash lights, headlights, parking lights, etc. If I turn off the auto lights it stops....maybe a fault code or something???? Any logical reason accepted.
A: i have an idea.............maybe u should get ur lights checked!!!!!!!!!! without getting them tested it may hurt the lights!
