Q: Is it possible to convert a lap belt to one with a shoulder strap on a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The middle seat in the back only has a lap belt. Is there a way to convert this into a seat belt with a shoulder strap?

A: Not easily. The seat back is not strong enough to support the strain of a person's weight on a shoulder belt during an accident.

Q: Instrument cluster on a 1996 Jeep Cherokee?
I have a 96 cherokee and have the basic instrument cluster ,gas guage and speedometer, and idiot lights. Would like to find a used one with gauges, but was wondering if it would be plug and play. Does anyone know if Jeep just ran one harness ,or did they run different harnesses depending on the cluster

A: The harnesses are plug and play. 96 is the last year where you have to change the sensors. Unforunately though the 97+ guages won't work for you.

Q: How do I clean the engine on a 1996 Jeep Cherokee 2wd?
Also the ceiling interior is falling, how do I do I repair it? I want to sell it but have to do some minor repairs before I put it out for veiwing. Thanks in advance!

A: Pickup some Engine Brite cleaner by GUNK from the local auto parts store. Get a plastic bag and place it over the Cap/Rotor (You don't want water to get in here, or you'll have to wait a long time for the car to start). Spray the cleaner, mostly around the engine block where the oil and grease is. Try not to spray too much on the plastic, but you should be fine if it gets on it. Wait a while, and then hose off. I like using a garden nozzle with the different spray patterns. Don't use the JET setting, and don't spray too much around the spark plugs either. If you have an air compressor, use that to spray and dry the excess water that collects in the pockets around the engine. Use some Armor All to detail the plastic. As for the head liner, the auto parts store might have the carpet spray glue. This stuff works wonders. Pull the headliner back to get a spray of glue in there, and then spray away. Push the liner back up and massage the bumps out of it. Good Luck!

Q: how much would it cost to have a water pump in to a 1996 jeep cherokee ?
I just bought a jeep and it needs a water pump ; i know itll be cheaper if i find somebody to do it but how much do you think it will be to have it put in ? and does anybody know how much it would be to have it registed into my name ?

A: it's really not hard to do, you could probably do it yourself. Here's how it's done: http://jeepin.com/features/waterpump/index.asp The pump should run about $40 or so depending on where you buy it. You don't need the fancy one, OEM is fine. Plan on about $100 installed depending on the garage and labor rates. Shop around, try some of the independent garages, especially if they will put in a pump you buy. Garages often have mark-ups of up to 100% or more on parts, so if you can buy it and have someone do the install you can save some money. I know a lot of guys who would do the work for lunch and a twelve-pack... Registration?? Depends on your state, some are easy, just a flat-fee, others, like here in California, get you for every penny they can. See if your state vehicle department has a website, it might give more info.

Q: How do I replace a ring pinion set on a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport?
I was told to have this done it'd be like $1200. I figure if I had some sort of instruction and/or walkthrough to follow, I'd be able to do it myself. Any auto-savvy folks out there who could weigh this on a difficulty scale and/or tell me the process involved? I'm pretty good with mechanical things, it's just something I've never tackled myself before!

A: not only will you need a manual, you'll need a dial indicator, access to a shop press, and alot of Miller tools that are sent to the dealers to properly set it up. for one, you need the spreader that spreads the housing open and releives the tension on the side bearings to get the carrier out. if you spread it more than .020 of an inch, you technically ruined the case because it will not return to preload the carrier correctly. you'll need dummy bearings to measure preload and calculate backlash, pinion depth measurement tools, and a bearing spreader. all this is in addition to normal hand and air tools. if you don't get your backlash or bearing preload right, you'll ruin the bearings and the gears. its a much better idea to have a professional do it. it costs alot to do because it takes alot of time, knowledge, and money in tools to do correctly.

Q: 1996 Jeep Cherokee headlights don't work. high beams are working just not the headlights. any suggestions?
1996 jeep cherokee sport 4.0 L 6 cyl

A: believe it or not I have seen both low beams go bad at the same time. try changing the bulbs first. don't touch the glass on the new bulbs with your bare hands

Q: Where is water pump located on a 1996 jeep cherokee classic ?
I have coolant gushing from the right middle of my engine.

A: on the front of the block, right behind the radiator, then right behind the pulleys.

Q: Where can I find a diagram for a fuse box in a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport?
The fuse for the radio blew out in my friends car and we are having a hard time finding anything on the internet that is helpful. Please help! Thanks!

A: Your 1996 Jeep Cherokee has a diagram label stamped on both fuse panel covers to identify each fuse. The radio fuse is a 15 amp fuse and it will be IN THE POWER DISTRIBUTION CENTER IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT NEAR THE BATTERY. The diagram label stamped on the fuse panel cover will list it as "Radio" and identify the number of it's position in the panel. If you have the factory amplifier there will also be a 25 amp fuse and it will be IN THE FUSE PANEL ON THE LOWER DASH JUST TO THE LEFT OF THE STEERING COLUMN. The diagram label stamped on the fuse panel cover will list it as "Radio/Amplifier" and identify the number of it's position in the panel.

Q: How much would it cost to replace engine gaskets on a 1996 jeep cherokee (8 cyl)?
Not sure if all or only a few gaskets need to be replaced, so can the answer be given as price per gasket? Must this be done by a mechanic? I think we're talking about just the oil gaskets, here, because the truck is leaking some oil.

A: well seeing how ur question is so vague i will do the best to answer this question. First if its just valve covers this you can do your self other then that i would seek the help of a trained tech. I am in the middle of putting new head gaskets on a dakota with a 5.9l v8 with the machine work and labor its just over 2000.00 so it can get pricey. oil pan gasket would run about 400 at a shop rear main seal around 700 and so on so more info would help tons.

Q: What size is the inlet/outlet of a muffler for a 1996 Jeep Cherokee?
I am looking to swap my stock muffler with a Flowmaster 40-Series Delta Flow Muffler. But whenever I go under to measure the inlet, and outlet size, I never can get an accurate number because it changes all the time. Any help would be great. Thanks 4.0 L Inline Six, normal Cherokee

A: Little or grand cherokee, and what engine do you have?

Q: What is the proper why to install an a/c compressor clutch on a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4wd with a 4.0 engine
As soon as i turn the a/c on after installing a good used a/c clutch the clutch asymbly throws sparks and heats up. It has done it twice with 2 good used clutch asemblys. I need to know what I'm doing wrong. I'd greatly appreciately your help.

A: You have a Sanden compressor. Go to this site at Sanden. http://www.sanden.com/support/pdf/sd7ser... Good Luck

Q: how good is the quality and durability of the 1996 jeep grand cherokee?
I have my eye on a well maintained 1996 grand cherokee with 171,000 miles, rebuilt transmission, immaculate inside and out

A: well if it has the rebuilt trans and is immaculate. I would get it. My 95 has 158,000 on it and it needs a new trans. other than that and a few oil leaks, it has been a great SUV. It has an inline six, 4.0 cyl and gets an average of 22 MPG on both city and highway. It has been a great truck that will go over alot of tough terain and there is enough room to haul people or stuff and there is a lot of leg room in the back. I have heard of people with these things lasting over 300,000 miles so I would go with it. They can also tow a pretty big amount with a towing package. GOOD LUCK!

Q: How do you replace the thermostat on 1996 Jeep Cherokee country?

A: remove the belt, idler pulley(to get to the lower housing bolt easier), remove the coolant sesnor connector, upper hose, and remove the two bolts from the housing. when you put it back together make sure you put the air bleed hole in the thermostat at 12:00 or it will consistantly overheat because you will not get the air out of the cooling system.
